We’re celebrating!
It’s true that it may seem kind of a stretch to celebrate right now, with these overlapping epidemics of COVID-19 and racial and social inequality. Of course COVID-19 is new but the other epidemics aren’t. Still, we’re celebrating.
We’re celebrating because more people than ever are speaking up about centering equity and justice in the health sector.
We’re celebrating because you’re here. More people all the time are reading, becoming members, and listening to our podcast series.
We’re celebrating because it’s the 3rd anniversary of the Health Communication Partners website!
I’m thrilled about that. Why? Because I’ve been an educator for over 20 years. I built this site 3 years ago as a way to bring some of the best research on language, literacy and learning from the education sector into the health sector. And when you’re here reading and listening, it means together we’re impacting the day to day health and well-being of the children, families and communities I have served my entire career.
I’m telling you now: everything on this site, everything in these series, is based in theories of equity and justice. Always reflective practice. Always learner centered. Always culturally and linguistically appropriate. And there’s no deficit perspective…on anyone.
Having this consistency over the years has meant there’s a lot of original resources here for you. So I’m going to show you around a bit. Let me tell you about what’s on the HealthCommunicationPartners website that you might not know about.
Free Library
Did you know we have a Library? And that it’s free? And that you can use it, right now? Sign up and you’ll immediately have access to our Free Member Library, with exclusive, free content on health communication, patient education and health literacy. Only for our members.
You get instant downloads right away! Including Module 1 of “Improving Medical Metaphors” Workshop. Plus the newsletters. Win-win.
Digital products
You can buy them right here and access them immediately! Right now! They’re especially handy if you’re an educator.
Addressing Implict Bias Audiobook Bundle. It shows you what you can do about implicit bias. It really walks you through. Class sets and Institutional copies are available, and they come with an instructors guide.
Effective Patient Education Audiobook Bundle Equity-oriented pedagogy that might change the way you think about patient education. Did you know the way you educate, on top of any words you use, can privilege some people and marginalize others? I’m revising this and will release the second edition soon. Then the price will go up, so get it now.
Improving Your Medical Metaphors Workshop. A 1-hour on-demand workshop that will help you reduce cultural bias and get the most out of the metaphors you use. There is simply nothing else out there like this.
Newsletters
At the end of each month, the BRIDGES newsletter brings you what’s happened at HCP that month. It’s full of our original, exclusive content, along with news and advance notice of what’s coming up.
The monthly In Focus newsletter takes a deep dive into one issue so you can have these resources together. This is a handy way to keep up without getting bowled over.
Not a subscriber? Get both with the form at the bottom of this page. No spam, no annoying, no deficit perspective.
BRIDGES
Last year I finalized and went public with the Building BRIDGES approach. BRIDGES is the fundamentals of what I do. BRIDGES is my structure.
Last year, I was asked to give a series of talks about Multi-Sector Communication at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in conjunction with the Region 2 Public Health Training Center. I unveiled the Building BRIDGES approach, which anchors the series. I just received the loveliest email from someone whose workplace was focusing on multi-sector communication. They’d just sat down and watched all three of these webinars in a row!
If you missed them, here’s the first, second, and third talk. I’m grateful to Columbia, R2PHTC, and Train.org. Credits are available and it’s free!
The Hubs
There’s so much content here, I had to organize it! The Hubs are central places that make it easy for you to browse within a topic:
Podcast series
You know about our podcast series, “10 Minutes to Better Patient Communication“…but did you know about the hyperlinked transcripts? Every ep has them!
These transcripts take time. And I do them for a few reasons:
- So you can read along
- So you can read if you prefer to, instead of listen
- For our listeners for whom English is an additional language, being able to hear and see the words can be helpful.
- I link to the resources right there! I don’t send you to a reference list. The link sends you to the page where you can get the article.
But wait, there’s more! Services tells you what HCP can do for you–whether you’re in public health, clinical medicine, academic medicine or digital health.
On the About page, I share pictures and tell my story.
I’m delighted to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the Health Communication Partners website with you. I built it for you, and I’ve worked on it, week in, week out, for those 3 years. To bring you totally original, research-based, resources you won’t find anywhere else. Every week, we publish something new. Every 2 weeks, there’s a new podcast episode. You’ve counted on us all this time to be there and show up. I’m grateful for your trust.
