As health professionals, you care about health literacy. It’s become shorthand for “the patient side of things,” and its importance can’t be overstated.
Yet health literacy is a large field. The research on health literacy covers a massive territory. So it’s easy to get lost in the weeds.
In this infographic, I offer some distinctions may be helpful if you’re trying to wrap your head around some of the complexities in the field. These are loose groupings or distinctions in health literacy–both research and practice–that have emerged in my reading of the research, and talking with providers over the years.
If you want to DO something about health literacy, in research or in practice (or both, hey!) this graphic may help you decide where to start. I aim to give you an overview, so you can see what draws your attention, or is a pressing need in your organization. And when you’re ready for more, check out our courses, or contact us.
