According to the AP and multiple news outlets, COVID-19 cases are rising in the U.S. — particularly among those who are unvaccinated.
The current scenario in the US of soaring COVID-19 cases, fueled by unvaccinated Americans and the super-contaigous delta variant, was described by Dr. Anthony Fauci as an “unnecessary predicament” according to the AP. As Dr. Fauci put it, “we’re out there, practically pleading with the unvaccinated people to go out and get vaccinated.”
Projections
This trend will likely continue to increase in the weeks ahead. NPR reported recently on projections acheived by combining 10 models from different academic teams.
In the most likely scenario, there would be around 60,000 cases and around 850 deaths each day, expected to peak in mid-October. (The eligible population for vaccination is presumed to be individuals aged 12 years and older.)
Urgent need for tailored campaigns
The NPR story points out that there are many factors at play “including whether the vaccination campaign picks up steam and whether other mitigation measures are put back into place,” quoting one expert saying, “Changes in behavior that we didn’t predict and big shifts in vaccination could very much change these results.”
It’s clear the pandemic isn’t over yet. In that same NPR story, William Hanage, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says, “we’re not going to be able to land the plane without turbulence. How much turbulence will track with how many people are vaccinated in a given community.”
