HCP’s Dr. Anne Marie Liebel recently appeared as a guest on “Healthcare for Humans” podcast series.
Healthcare for Humans was created by family physician Dr. Raj Sundar. Dr. Sundar’s aim is “to educate clinicians on how to care for culturally diverse communities so we can all be better healers for all patients, no matter who they are.”
Dr. Liebel was interviewed on two recent episodes (Ep 48 and Ep 49) of Healthcare for Humans as part of a series on language use. In this two-part interview, Dr. Liebel and Dr. Sundar discuss the process of reflecting on patient communication from their different vantage points.
Dr. Sundar was a guest on “10 Minutes to Better Patient Communication” in 2023 (Part 1 and Part 2), when he shared stories of his journey to deciding to focus on his communication with patients in order to be a better doctor. This led him to consider the cultural contexts around the patient encounter. He also realized that understanding the cultural contexts of patients’ communities would help him be a more empathetic and effective physician. His podcast series is part of his ongoing work to integrate his learnings into his practice.
In his interivew with Dr. Liebel for Healthcare for Humans, Dr. Sundar returns the favor and asks Dr. Liebel to share the story of how she founded Health Communication Partners and came to work with reflective practice in patient education. From there, they discuss equity, culture, deficit perspectives, and practical strategies for improving communication with patients and clients.
